Winners of Te Matatini 2009 Kapa Haka Festival Announcement

It is 9:44 on Monday morning and I still can’t find an announcement anywhere for the overall winners or full results of Matatini 09, New Zealand’s national Kapa Haka competition. You would think Maori TV which covered the event would post details of the winning groups somewhere. Nothing on the Te Matatini official website either. Don’t these people know about the internet?

  9. Maraea says:

Thank goodness, someone knows what their doing I too watched all day, and even stayed up to watch Te Kaea, only to see exactly what I saw on the earlier broadcast.

  10. Patea TARANAKI says:

    Much appreciated
Have been looking all morning & afternoon.
Yeah I agree with comments above.
C’mon Matatini or Maori TV ( someone) be accountable to the people how hard is it to ask the CEO for the official results 5mns after theyve been announced. The komiti should of had these readily available to the MEDIA.
Otherwise CONGRATS those that were placed & too much to ALL the teams.

  11. Hikahe says:

My thoughts like everyone else couldn’t get results from Matatini site nothing from Maori TV after covering it all day yesterday. That is pretty poor from both those Maori organisations.

  12. Gloria Rehu says:

Maybe they’re all sleeping… hard few days…. STILL could’a hooked us up! Shot whoever posted those results Awesome stuff!!!

    Doi Doi Ana!

  13. natty harding says:

  15. Aroha says:

    Kia ora
Arohamai engari oku nei whakaaro anei aku roopu tino pai rawatu – ko Te Matarae i o Rehu, Ko Nga Uri o Whanoa, Ko Ngati Ranginui, ko Te Waka Huia, ko Te Iti Kahurangi, ko Waihirere…
Kei hea te rohe naianei mo te Matatini? Where is the next Matatini being held???

  16. Te Aroha Morehu says:

I think the struggle for the TV stations is that they originally planned to just play the final which would probably have included the judges decision.

But as the format changed, it meant the same with the channel displaying the results. They would have taken up some precious advertising time which is the cream that keeps them going. If anything, we should be asking Maori TV to send out a DVD with all the shows on it.

  17. Werahiko says:

I thought I heard Hone Harawira say the next festival will be at Eden Park. I might recheck the tape….I’m sure he said, my son thought he heard it too….

  18. Paora Kerehoma says:

To meke for the results, not so meke for maori tv.does anyone know who the next hosts are?

  19. Maurice Hawke says:

Sweet, was looking for these results for ages, My mrs is going to be stoked that Tuhourangi won the Haka…thanks you guys ROCK!!!..

  20. Raech says:

I agree with Patea….Waited all night for the results. I think it was a poor effort from the organisers not to publish the results. I wonder when they were announced and why they didn’t replay 1st 2nd and 3rd place overall.

  21. Cheaky Maori says:

Kiaora whanau….. No need to attack maori tv or the matatini organization for lack of broadcasting the winners…. You falas was just not on to it enuff…. lol Ever think to tune into the radio stations???? Radio Watea??? Mo wera atu nga teihana i o matou nei rohe??? The announcements were broadcasted LIVE on a whole lotta radio stations…. We were stuck in traffic in the middle of Ngatea and SH2 trying to get home from the matatini to auckland and got the results 1st hand whanau… Didn’t have to wait for someone to post the results on the internet…. lol u falas are neat alrite… Tu much Te Waka Huia…. 32. Tamaki rox says:

Thanks for the results! Footage I saw was fantastic!! Pity the organisers let MTV down with results which were delayed HEAPS (and so couldn’t go live to air)! Next comp to be announced in June – Hone was joking about Eden Park cos it’ll still be under construction for rugby world cup. Have heard performances will be available online at MTV +/- Matatini websites soon

  33. Mangere Bey says:

hopefully i can get to the next one and it doesnt rain….mauri ora. BLAAAAAAH.

  34. Tawhiti says:

Thanks to the person who posted this ,, Far Mean TE ARAWA ! (: -Nga Mihi nui ki te roopu o Te Matarae I O Rehu.

&& BIG UHPS 2 Te Waka Huia .. Mean Maori Te Waka Huia

  35. SiiMBa says:

Kia ora for putting this up.. i was looking for the overall ranking of all the roopu.. but this was really helpful too..

  36. Parawai says:

Kia ora rawa atu. Amazing that 9.30 the night after this is the first place I’ve found the results. Matatini website only has Waka Huia winning, not even the placings, let alone the other results.

  37. artyzgal says:

I listened live online via the Maori radio stations and knew the results as they came to hand. I have since checked on the Matatini page and they have since updated it. It states that the next hosts are going to be announced in June.

  38. Ex Te Arawa supporter says:

Come on TeArawa, why the protest to the judges about Wakahuia, there was no hype about Wakahuia b4 their performance, they deserve to come 1st,they were awesome,John Tamahere was right(on radio live)1 Te Arawa group was crying and had sour grapes about the Maatatua and Tairawhiti groups coming out on top,Shame on you D Grant.

  39. Kapa says:

Looking forward to the next National comps. The organising committee need to remember who matters the most i.e. the performers, the kaumatua, the whanau, hapu and iwi supporters. NOT THE CORPORATE & SUPPOSED VIP GUESTS…….We work hard for 2yrs to fundraise and get to these comp’s and pay our way to these hui and what do we get? Crappy tv screens, poor seating, poor visability, poor sound systems…….our roopu hope it is not held in Tauranga again unless they improve all the above. What a pity the top nine finalists from each pool weren’t given the opportunity to strut there stuff again…..might have seen a different result then. ENGARI congrats to the winners

  40. Peggy H says:

I was gutted that I had to leave early and couldn’t hear the results, so it has been great to find them here (and point well taken about listening to the Maori radio stations!).

Thank you for your initiative in posting the full results, as it has been a great gift to us all!

To SiiMBA’s point about wanting a full ranking of all groups, based on the judging criteria I don’t think they produce one.

Here is a paraphrase from p. 8 of the programme from the festival, and my general understanding:

    How the competition works:

The 36 teams are divided into 3 pools of 12.

The 3 kapa haka teams from each pool with the 3 highest combined marks in the compulsory disciplines go forward to the finals. (In this case the selection was made by and known only to the judges prior to announcing, as there were no finals due to cancellation of one day because of bad weather.)

    The compulsory disciplines are

    Whakaeke
    Moteatea
    Waiata-a-ringa
    Poi
    Haka
    Whakawatea

The following are awarded individual taonga or trophies (as above), but are not assessed in the final combinations:

    Kakahu (costumes)
    Manukura wahine (female leader)
    Manukura tane (male leader)
    Waiata tira (choral)
    *Titonga waiata-a-ringa (original action song)
    *Titonga poi (original poi)
    *Titonga haka (original haka)
Titonga waiata hou (best original composition overall highest aggregate marked * above)
Te kairangi o te reo (excellence for pronunciation and content in Maori language)

So the judges need to find out which groups get the highest marks in the 6 competitive sections and add them up, but once they’ve got the highest 9 I believe they don’t do any further rankings.

    Hope this helps.

It has been so good to read the results and everyone’s comments here. Thank you!

    Peggy

  49. Me says:

Thanks to the vlunteers who were awesome, hard job trying to tell the Maori to sit down and kore e whakarongo aye cuz, big ups. My mum was well looked after in the kaumaatua room even though the system failed at times. However the seatings out could have been alot better for them. Don’t get me wrong the king has to have his seperate area,so he sholu have a nice seating area. I only wish the kaumatua could have had a much closer seat for them to see the stage cos my mama and her whanau could hardly see. When they did join us it was not cormfortable for them, aue. Sad about the rain but hey the safety of the performers come first, good call. As ususal bugger all seating for the general public so u kinda had to sit in one spot and safe guard it all day if u scored a good one, like us. We got there at 6am every morning.Overall awesome hui. Ka aroha ki nga whanaunga no Te Arawa, next time. Engari Tuhourangi did really well. U guys were awesome. Piki mihi kia Wakaz, yea. To the whanaunga fron Whangara, whoop whoop…engari taku mihinui ki toku whanau, Apanui.

  50. Whetu says:

Mauri ora koutou. I heard the results from whanau but wanted to see a break down. Thanks so much as Maori TV and Te Matatini dont have the results publicised. It’s pretty hard for me to listen to radio stations as I’m currently living in Laos, South East Asia. Well done TPM!!!!

  51. Paku says:

I performed @ in Tauranga and heard that Matatini 2011 will either be in Whangarei or Tauranga will be given a 2nd chance to get things RIGHT! No official placings for all groups who perfromed were given. All groups were given a list which had every roopu’s score and you just had to figure it out yourself. So hopefully http://www.tematatini.co.nz will show official placings soon! Waka Huia were massive, if it was still best 3 from each pool, Matarae would have been in top 9 for sure! Tu te Manawa Maurea’s haka was massive and should have placed, Iti Kahurangi deserved to win Coral, i heard they came 5th. Massive 4 days Tauranga Moana apart from the judges having the best seat in the stadium! xxx

  52. WAIKATO says:

WELL DONE TO ALL THE WHANAU IN TPM, YOU’S WERE THE BOMB AND IT CAN ONLY GET BETTER FROM HERE. ALSO A BIG CONGRATS TO ITI KAHURANGI AND OF COURSE THE SUPREME WINNERS WAKA HUIA. THEY ARE JUST PERFECTION TEHEHEHE

  60. Judge D Wongly says:

it was a great event. congrats to all the teams that placed. i think however that the competition is overated. i saw some wonderful teams, that never got any placings but were deserved, some even moreso than those that did place. the hype that sits behind judgements made by the judges to determine the ‘best’ is very consumerist, and shallow. so what does being the ‘best’ mean? the best singers? choreographers? i look beyond these things. i reckon kapa haka is still about people first and foremost. the best group in my opinion is one that practices being good to its members, and their connection to each other is real, and not merely performed for the competition. this type of connection can be seen on stage as well during performance. congrats to groups like tu te manawa maurea who moved me to tears.

  65. Nadia says:

    Kia ora…
Thanks for posting the results as outlined above. I kind of agree with the fact that there was a little bit of hype for Te Waka Huia before their performance on stage…ie; Highlighting the fact that Ngapo and whaea Pimia are retiring as tutors of TWH…and then getting everyone in the audience to stand up and sing whaea Pimia a birthday waiata (despite the fact that her birthday is in JULY???)…it was kind of pointless!!!!thanks to Moko Tini lol, perhaps getting a sympathy vote from the judges? This should not have been allowed…Despite the fact that I admire and respect the awesome contribution that Ngapo and Pimia have made to Kapa Haka!
My favourites for the weekend include `Nga Tumanako’, from Auckland, so dynamic and beautiful to watch…I enjoyed Tu Mataora from Palmerston North (great fluidity on stage, and lovely harmonies)…as well as Te Hokowhitu atu(my gosh kei runga noa atu koutou)…and oh yes Te Iti Kahurangi as well (our leaders of tommorrow)…So a big ups to all those roopu…and all the best for 2009 and beyond! Your time will come…Naaku noa na Nadia…

  66. Maori-Avatar says:

Awesome for the winners was there for the prize giving, big ups to Te Pou o Mangatawhiri for getting a couple of seconds, ka pai whanau for the first time!

My big stink is about the so called DVD that the organisers said will be available for the public to buy, especiallly since the crown was told no photos or video footage was to be taken at anytime of the performance, only only of whanau groups, and even then only if you have written consent from the kapa. I thought that was a stupid idea, wait to go organiser for trying to squeez every penny out of your own people. I know there were copyright issues and that it was only the decision of one team who said they don’t want people video taping them to make it a complete video ban!!

ANyways the crown was told that we would be able to buy a dvd of the performances but I have yet to see any announcement of said dvd, just another stuff up by the organisers about this years nationals! Oh and I wouldn’t blame MTS for the video coverage or anything like that, the production company for Te Matatini was actually ‘front of the box’ they just used MTS manpower! He hoa oku e mahi ana ki whakaata maori. Engari . . . think about MTS does not get nowhere near enough funding to fully do the coverage of te matatini, so the need of the pulic (and MTS) to cover the entire weekend including finals is impossible so yea dont be too quick to blame a lot of stuff on MTS. Its the other production houses and organisers that decide whether to put money into spreading our kaupapa and tikanga to the maori nation like it should be!

Aroha mai mo te roa o aku korero engari I needed to vent lol!

TUMEKE MATAATUA for hosting Te Matatini 2009. Even with the cancellation of Friday, it was a very good decision to have groups perform once and find a winner. BUT it would have been interesting to find out who were the finalists and seeing a FINAL take place. How ever my congradulations to Te Wakahuia. The ‘cream’ of Kapahaka, nga mihi nui ki a Ngapo raua ko Pimia me o raua tamariki mokopuna. Kei a ratou te rakau o Te Wakahuia, he roopu toa i nga tau e tu mai nei.

  70. Tyler Jacobs says:

    Kia ora all…

I too want to vent my fustrations lol. I think the organisers need to strategise about a plan B. Making our people wait in the rain on day 2 was pathetic, it was obvious that it was going to rain on the Friday, yet they didn’t take it upon themselves to cover the stage the night before (cos they were sweeping it down on Friday morning). I think that they could have utilized the stadium seating to their advantage by having the stage where the huge screen was therefore people could have sat under cover (stadium seating), cos from what I could see there was hardly anyone sitting there! I also want to point out that on the Thursday night (1st night of competition), they should have had an onstage mic test, cos the sound on the first night wasn’t the best!!!! probably think about having a local whakangahau roopu as a tester! These are just some of my whakaaro, of which I will be passing on to Te Matatini Committee. In terms of CD’s of performances, I know for a fact that the iwi radio network (Maori radio stations) have been offered the CD’s at a total cost of $720 for the 36 roopu. @$20.00 each, as a form of fundraising for the roopu. But Im sure that Maori TV will be screening these roopu on Toi Whakaari real soon!

    hei kona mai

I hope that the national executive Matatini body take on board all of the comments that everyone has expressed about the recent festival via this forum, the radio talkback shows and and by our group team leaders and others. The festival has grown to such an extent that unfortunately the bottom line seems to be about profits and not the people.
I would like to see more emphasis on traditonal performances and less theatrical performances. Also we need a fair and balanced number of judges in each discipline e.g. one judge from different iwi and not 2 or 3 judges from the same iwi. I also want to say how wonderful it was to have Te Arawa back in the competition. Whether we like or don’t like their style they are in a class of there own and are usually crowd pleasers.
I am looking forward to the next festival and hope that lessons have been learnt from the Tauranga debacle.

Moko Tini u egg!!! i cant believe an ex waka huia member would do that to Ngapo and Pimia! u obviously didnt learn anything about whakaiti while u were there. waka huia didnt need your little spiel if anything u did more damage to their chances and now look, Nga uri o te whanoa are playing up (like they had a chance anyway!) like little school girls. CONGRATS WAKA HUIA AND THE OTHER TOP TEAMS!!! if there was a final waka huia would have taken it to a whole other level. booo hoooo hooooo TWO MORE YEARS BOY!!!

  81. Outsider says:

Firstly, I want to shed some positivity onto this somewhat dark forum by giving a big mihi out to the organisers of this years festival…unfortunately they couldnt control the weather, thats up to the Gods whanau…so nga mihi nui kia koutou te poari o Te Matatini, koutou ko nga kai mahi i whakapau wera ana…its a hard job but someone has to do it!!

Finally, its really bugging me that people think that Waka Huia may have won out of sympathy. For starters, there are no scripts given from teams to the MC’s in regards to what they should say prior to a team making there entrance onto stage..shame on Donna Grant for protesting – As a supposed “senior” kapa haka performer, and Te Arawa delegate, she shouldve known better than to assume tohunga kapa haka like Ngapo and Pimia Wehi would have warranted Moko Tini to do what she did…Kuare! Not all of Te Arawa are on her band wagon either…maybe she should stop and listen to her people she is supposed to be representing instead of taking it upon herself to protest on behalf of them…

I think its better not having a final…one shot, no pools, even playing field, and all groups have to give it death on the one performance…it would take haka to another level if every one knew there was only one chance to deliver the goods…

Congratulations to all groups who made it to the nationals..at the end of the day, ehara ko tetahi roopu anake i toa – engari ko ngai tatou te Maori i toa!

    And Im out..

  82. Lisa says:

Whanau a Apanui, mita o te reo, best poi composition, best waiata ringa composition, kaitataki Tane and 3rd over all. Just goes to prove it’s not what you do, but how you do it. A team could go on and do yellow submarine and still win! It wouldn’t surprise me there were so many “borrowed” tunes used.
As for Moko Tini, well she probably did say the wrong thing, but Bub and Pimia Wehi certainly do not need any sympathy vote to win, as their record shows. And I am certainly not a Waka Huia fan. Also. as my memory recalls, they’ve been “retire-ing” for the past ten years atleast!
I didn’t know that it was Donna Grant who protested but it certainly seems like a Trevor Maxwell influence in there somewhere, going by the numerous past protests from Te Arawa, unfortunately.
Well done Tuhourangi, you were beautiful.
As for you lot who for what ever reason couldnt be there….well get there and live it. as a performer or as a supporter.See you in 2011, where ever it maybe.

As a performer i would rather let my roopu be safe then getting hurt. If u wern’t a performer u wouldn’t understand how its hard to perform on a wet stage jumping around with out falling over. hei aha? Lot of stuff went down at Matatini 09, big up’s to Opotiki mai Tawhiti for cleanin up on the satday after all the tents were destroyed or broken in the storm. they got no credit for all the work they done setting up and even cleaning up on sunday. Kia Ora Whanau.

Just wanna comment on the pool placings, I personally think that ita way fairer if you take away the pool syste because you trulu see huz da best ovda best, with no second chances….Its all or nothing for that 1oppotunity ur given!!!!!!

Ive calculated dat some teams that placed in top 7 like Te Itikahurangi and Tu Temanawa Maurea would not have placed in top 9 eventhough they were clearly better than some of the teams that would have made it through the pool system…..

That there just justifies the fact that the pool system isnt fair and doesnt actually show the best of the best!!!!!!!!

Hei whakaaro maybe coz I know how exciting it is watching a top 9 or wateva they should just take out the pool system and announce who got the top 9 placings and then they all perform agen so they were still all top 9 teams but maybe just in a different order depending on their 2nd performance??? E aua hoki

    Just my whakaaro thats all…

Ngaa mihi ki a Ngai Maori e kaha haapai i ngaa taonga tukuiho a o taatou maatua tuupuna.

  103. Aue Hika says:

Aue hika ma! I have just been reading this blog. Very interesting to say the least. Pai rawa atu nga kupu o Outsider raua ko Pou.
What’s with all the hating? Te Matatini (with all it’s faults and blessings) was nothing less than a success. I’m not here to cut our Maori whanau down (i.e. the Committee, Tauranga Moana, Te Arawa, Te Waka Huia me era atu), I’ll leave that to those Maori haters out there doing what they can to cut us down (and getting nowhere because they’re invisible nothings!!!!).
Tawhirimatea tested our resolve that Friday. Tumatauenga is also helping us to vent and hate!!! The Committee had very little options available to them, one being hope, the other to cancel. Obviously the first one didn’t work out for us Maori, so I understand that for our safety and those of our kapa, the Friday had to be cancelled. There are very few places in New Zealand that can accommodate 20,000 people safely in the event of storms. I can only think of Vectra in Auckland that can provide a sheltered venue able to keep out noise of the pelting rain for those numbers.
As a supporter of more than one group from more than one rohe, I was just really glad to see all the kapa and enjoy the sounds we Maori are famous for.
We’ll always agree or disagree with the judges and that’ll never stop. If you think the judging was impartial and wish to challenge the process of selecting the judges (or be one yourself), then actively contend it and don’t let your voice be silent. Just keep it silent if you do nothing about it.
If you think that you could plan for EVERYTHING, take the lead or do whatever you can to participate in the process. Maori are many things, and dynamically resilient is one of those. We have untold Maori, present and past, that have demonstrated that.
Congratulations Te Waka Huia, you weren’t my favourite but who cares aye, you won!

  105. Maoriness says:

    Kia ora

Our kids travelled 4 and a half hours to Rotorua to stay and then had to spend another 1 hour or so travelling back and forth to Tauranga everyday for those 4 days. That means getting up at 5am every morning to shower, breakfast, get lunch ready, finally depart for that hour long drive to only get there and have to see the stage from a sideway view, or cram down in front of the stage if they were lucky or else they had to peak behind adults and stand up.
That uneventful horrible day that was cancelled. AUE!! After that restless morning drive, firstly we had to wait to get past the security to get down to the stage or walk around to the grandstand but then we had to wait almost 4 hours only to hear it was cancelled. We gathered our kids up as fast as we could to beat that nasty traffic and go back to Rotorua and we had a nice time at the hot pools despite the horrible weather.

I just felt the set up of the stage, seating and shops could have been more better organised. Im not sure exactly what it takes to organise these types of events but im quite sure they should have had a far better set up.

Although our tamariki were hoha every single day we were there i must congradulate Te Matatini organisers for having wonderful parking wardens which performed their tasks/jobs exceptionally well despite standing out there chasing people who dont listen and taking the sh*t from all the moaners. The parking was well organised and i thank them very much for that.

Now our kura will think twice next time about whether going to such an event and how will it affect the kids. Sure you might think, dont come since your moaning. But isnt it really to show the kids what they can do? This isnt a message to whakaiti but something rather to think about. We werent the only kura, i can imagine what other kura went through as well.

Congradulations to Waka Huia. Long time coming. Although they werent my pick i still congradulate them, obviously they were technically the best. So ka pai them.

I would like to think that next time they will have more options and back up plans.

Awesome comp this year. The only downside was the streaming live video over the net. It took forever but neverthless was cool to see something :) Also waiting to get results. I understand after such a long day everyone probably wanted to just get home but for us that werent there, whats the go with just pressing a few buttons and updating the website! That frustrated the crap out of me, wanting to know who won what. Lol
