Shortland Street TV Series

Shortland Street is New Zealand’s longest-running soap opera.

It’s very first episode went out on Monday, 25 May 1992 and continues to hold strong audiences today. South Pacific Pictures are the production company behind the show and in New Zealand it is broadcast weeknights on TV2.

The show is set in a modern metropolitan hospital in the fictional Auckland City suburb of Ferndale. It has been the starting platform for many of New Zealand’s acting talent.

In popular culture, Shortland Street is sometimes referred to as Shorty Street, Shorty or just The Street.

Perhaps the most famous line in New Zealand popular culture to come out of Shortland Street was “You’re not in Guatemala now, Dr. Ropata” which was delivered in the very first episode by Nurse Carrie Burton to Dr Hone Ropata.

Shortland Street’s 4000th episode will air on Friday, June 6th, 2008 at 7.00pm on TV2.
